Barbie's 2024 Dia de Muertos Collection isn't merely about playtime – each doll is a remarkable piece of art, reflecting the rich cultural heritage of Mexico.

Dia de Muertos, celebrated on November 1st and 2nd, is a multi-day event where families remember and pay tribute to their deceased loved ones. This celebration extends from October 31st to November 6th, depending on local customs.

A Brief History of Dia de Muertos Barbie

These exclusive Barbie dolls draw inspiration from La Calavera Catrina, an iconic symbol of the Day of the Dead in Mexico. The initial iteration of the doll was launched in September 2019 and quickly became a sensation, selling out even before its online release.

For the 2023 and 2024 releases, Mexican-American designer Javier Meabe lent his creative vision. His designs for the 2020 collection resonated deeply, as he shared:

"As a Mexican American designer, it was crucial for me to express my creativity in designing a doll that showcases the brilliant hues and striking patterns of my culture. Moreover, I aimed to represent and celebrate the traditions I grew up with in Barbie. My wish is that these dolls raise awareness of the Dia de Muertos festivities."

Meabe further emphasizes the significance of the holiday, stating:

"Dia de Muertos holds immense importance as it honors and respects those we've lost. It's a breathtaking custom, and I'm thrilled that Barbie is acknowledging the Dia de Muertos holiday. Representation matters greatly in our community, and I hope young girls can identify themselves through this doll. Barbie has long celebrated women, dreams, and girl empowerment. Now, she also embodies traditions and cultures cherished by many."
